PUMA owns most of the first page of search results for its own HYROX shoes and sells them at the events. None of that tells you which pair belongs on your feet. This page starts from your situation, works out which shoe property it makes non-negotiable, and only then asks whether a PUMA model delivers it, including where the answer is no. Are PUMA HYROX shoes the official race shoe?

PUMA is the official partner, not the official requirement. PUMA's newsroom announcement of 3 June 2024 states that PUMA became "the official apparel and footwear partner for all HYROX races from 2024 to 2027". That is a sponsorship. The official rulebook names no brand. It requires closed-toe shoes throughout, with one named exception at the wall-ball rig. What it does not do is point at a manufacturer. Clothing and equipment rules run wider than the closed-toe clause alone, so check the full permitted list for your event rather than assuming anything closed-toe clears it; our HYROX rules guide covers the clause in full.

The two claims are worth separating, because search results blur them. PUMA's commercial status decides what is sold in the expo hall and what the elite field is contracted to wear, not what your foot needs over 8 km.

What the partnership actually produced, and when

The 2024 announcement scoped something narrower than most people assume: "bespoke HYROX colourways of existing footwear models, including the award-winning Velocity NITRO 3, Deviate NITRO 3 and Deviate NITRO Elite 3". Colourways of shoes that already existed, the first of them a road racer in HYROX branding.

The purpose-built race shoe came later. PUMA's media release for it is dated 19 February 2026, and Runner's World UK says it was "built specifically for the sport from the ground up, rather than simply repackaged in branded colours". The independent reviewer whose video sits further down this page reads it differently, calling the shoe "almost identical to the standard Elite model but with a few key differences to make it more race specific".

Start with your situation, not with the model list

Model names churn. PUMA has already replaced a Velocity NITRO 4 with a 5 and a Deviate NITRO Elite 3 with a 4. The shoe property you need does not churn, because it is set by the race and by your own body. Work the table left to right: find the row that describes you, read across to the property it makes non-negotiable, and only then ask whether a PUMA model delivers it.

Three rows in that table end in something other than a clean yes, which is the honest state of the range rather than a swipe at it. The awkward cases are wide feet, empty spec sheets and the absence of lab data, and none of those are fixed by the partnership badge.

Every quoted description is PUMA's own wording, from PUMA's model comparison page and its US product pages. Prices are PUMA's US listings read on 4 August 2026 and move by region, retailer and season. The empty cells are genuinely empty: PUMA publishes no figure there, and reporting that absence is more useful than filling it.

The race shoe: PUMA x HYROX Deviate NITRO Elite 4

PUMA's media release claims a "NITROFOAM Elite" midsole, a "full-length, newly curated carbon fibre PWRPLATE", a "full-coverage, high traction PUMAGRIP outsole" and a "feather-light ULTRAWEAVE upper". Those are manufacturer claims about a manufacturer's product, not verified performance. PUMA named Hunter McIntyre, Linda Meier, Jake Dearden, Jake Williamson and Joanna Wietrzyk among the debut athletes.

On its US product page, read on 4 August 2026, PUMA publishes an 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, a 40 mm heel and 32 mm forefoot stack, a weight of 194 g in size UK8, and a list price of $260.00.

The independent read comes from Runner's World UK, bylined Lucy Gornall, updated 8 June 2026 and tested by Ali Ball. It gives this shoe its "Best Hyrox-specific shoe" label, and its most useful observation is about the plate rather than the foam: "The full-length carbon PWRPLATE feels efficient rather than aggressive, which suits Hyrox far better than an overly stiff setup would." Its listed drawback is blunt: "Quite an investment unless you're a Hyrox fanatic or chasing a podium."

The spec sheet nobody agrees on

PUMA's US product page publishes 194 g at UK8, a 40/32 mm stack and an 8 mm drop. Running Warehouse, the retailer listing quoted in our best HYROX shoes guide, publishes 7.1 oz (201 g), a 39/31 mm stack, an 8 mm drop and $259.95. They agree on the drop and disagree on both the weight and the stack. These are not two similar shoes: Running Warehouse publishes model number 312959-01 and PUMA's own product page sits at a URL ending in that same style code. One product code, two published weights, two published stack heights.

We are not picking a winner, because there is no basis on which to pick one. Runner's World UK lists the same numbers PUMA does, which is a reason to treat those two as one figure set rather than as corroboration. No laboratory has published instrumented measurements of this model anywhere we could verify. The naming is looser still: the media release, the retail page, Runner's World and our own sibling guide use four different names for one product code, and this page uses the retail name. The practical takeaway is smaller than the argument: every weight quoted anywhere is for one sample size, usually UK8, and yours will not weigh that.

RadDadBodTV's chaptered review walks the specs, fit, upper, midsole and outsole, and carries an on-video disclosure: "I was provided some of these shoes free of charge for the purpose of review. I was not paid or asked to make any specific content."

The plated all-rounder: PUMA x HYROX Deviate NITRO 4

PUMA positions this one as a "balanced all-round plated option" with a "more practical setup for regular sessions". PUMA publishes an 8 mm drop, a 38/30 mm stack, 250 g at UK8, and $180.00 USD, read on 4 August 2026.

Now the single most useful independent signal on this page. Runner's World UK gave its "Best overall" label not to the HYROX-specific flagship but to this shoe: the cheaper, heavier, non-race model, at £150. An outlet that tested both put the general-purpose plated shoe first. The halo model is not automatically the right buy.

Its stated drawback matters if it applies to you: "The fairly narrow profile may not suit wider feet." No spec sheet fixes a fit problem.

The trainers: Velocity NITRO 4, Velocity NITRO 5 and Activate NITRO

On PUMA's US site the HYROX Velocity NITRO 4 is sold as a running shoe and the HYROX Velocity NITRO 5 as a training shoe, both at $150.00 as read on 4 August 2026. Same family name, same price, different category. That is a buying signal, not a listing quirk.

Velocity NITRO 4, the only lab-measured one

RunRepeat is the only source here with instrumented figures for any PUMA shoe. In its July 2026 HYROX guide it labels the PUMA Velocity Nitro 4 "Best flexibility" with a score of 93, measuring "only 7.9 oz (224g)", a 33.7/24.0 mm stack, heel energy return of 67.5 percent and forefoot at 74.2 percent, and a forefoot 41.1 percent more malleable than average.

One caveat that matters: RunRepeat measured the PUMA Velocity Nitro 4, not the HYROX colourway of it. PUMA publishes a 10 mm drop for the HYROX version but no weight and no stack height, and whether it shares the tested shoe's midsole geometry is not something either source states.

Velocity NITRO 5 and Activate NITRO, and what PUMA leaves out

PUMA publishes no drop, no stack height and no weight for the HYROX Velocity NITRO 5. That is a finding, not something to paper over. PUMA's comparison page calls it its "most versatile option" for "daily runs, conditioning work, gym sessions, and first-race preparation", aimed at "new HYROX athletes", but you cannot compare it on paper against anything, because the paper is blank.

The Activate NITRO is the gym shoe and PUMA says so directly, calling it the "gym-focused option" emphasising "control, grip, and stability". PUMA publishes a 6 mm drop, an increased toe-box width and a PUMAGRIP ATR outsole, and no weight or stack height. It is not a race shoe and PUMA does not present it as one, which counts in PUMA's favour rather than against it.

What the race actually asks of any of these

The format is fixed worldwide: eight rounds, each a 1 km run followed by one functional workout station, in the same order at every event: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jump, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, Wall Balls. What follows is aimed only at what separates one PUMA model from another.

Grip, where the sled decides it

Open men push 335 lb (152 kg) and open women push 225 lb (102 kg) over 50 m, then pull 227 lb (103 kg) for open men and 172 lb (78 kg) for open women back over 50 m, according to the official Season 26/27 HYROX rulebook. A foot that slides dumps leg drive into the floor.

Every model in the PUMA HYROX line runs a PUMAGRIP outsole, with the ATR variant on the Activate NITRO, so grip is close to a constant inside this range and choosing between them on it is choosing on nothing. Stability, where the plated shoes cost you

Both arrive with the calves already taxed.

The published 40 mm heel stack that helps the Elite 4 over 1000 m is the same stack working against you here: the higher the foam, the further the ankle sits from the floor and the more the platform rolls under a sideways load. The whole PUMA range is arranged along this trade-off. The Elite 4 buys running economy and pays at the loaded stations, the Activate NITRO does the reverse, and the two middle models sit between them.

The one place shoes come off

The rulebook requires closed-toe shoes throughout, with a single named exception at the wall-ball rig, where 100 reps are performed, the same count in every division according to the official Season 26/27 HYROX rulebook. When PUMA HYROX shoes are the wrong pick

No independent HYROX-specific durability testing exists for any of these models, so every durability claim here is a manufacturer's or an individual's. No laboratory measurements of the Deviate NITRO Elite 4 have been published anywhere we could verify. Fit is individual and no spec sheet substitutes for putting the shoe on. Nobody at RoxTribe has handled any of these shoes, which is why this page cites other people's measurements instead of inventing its own, and prices move.
