- Whether HYROX is harder than a marathon depends on the demand: in the evidence compared here, a road marathon asks for more time on your feet, running and fuel, and a singles HYROX for more intensity, load, grip, restarts and judged movement.
- The official HYROX US FAQ gives the average HYROX finisher time in 2024/2025 as 1.5 hours and compares the race to a sprint triathlon or a fast half marathon.
- A marathon is 42.195 km by the World Athletics standard, while a singles HYROX in Open or Pro holds 8 km of running in 8 runs of 1000 m under the Season 26/27 Singles rulebook.
- In Brandt and colleagues' 2025 study of a simulated HYROX, eleven recreational athletes spent most of the race at 90 percent of maximum heart rate or above, with heart rate, blood lactate and exertion all peaking at the wall balls.
- In Ryu and colleagues' 2016 study, amateur men who ran 42 km still had raised creatine kinase, a blood marker of muscle damage, on the third day; no study cited here measured the days after a HYROX.
Is HYROX harder than a marathon? On some demands, yes. On others, no. The marathon is the longer, steadier task, counted in hours and kilometres. A singles HYROX adds sleds, kettlebells and a sandbag, breaks the effort into runs and stations under judges, and, on the studies available, sits closer to your limit.
Which race is harder for you depends on which of those you are weakest at, so this page lets you score it. Marathon figures name their source in the sentence, HYROX rules come from the official Season 26/27 rulebooks, and the comparison is a singles race, Open or Pro, against a road marathon.
A race in rounds against a race in one piece
A singles HYROX is eight rounds, each a 1 km run followed by one functional workout station. Section 1 of the Season 26/27 Singles rulebook sets the order as run first, then station, so the race opens on a run. That section keeps the running distance the same across the divisions it covers (Women, Women Pro, Men, and Men Pro), while, in the rulebook's words, the repetition range and/or weights differ between them.
World Athletics sets the marathon at 42.195 km, calls it the longest race on the Olympic programme and says the distance was standardised in 1921. There are no workout stations along the way: the distance is the event.
Two races this different cannot be ranked with a single verdict, so the next section takes them one demand at a time. For HYROX against other sports, see our comparisons with CrossFit and Spartan.
Score both races on the demands that decide it
Mark a row if its last column describes you, because that is a demand your training has not yet covered. Row 9 is unscored, so skip it. Each "Heavier in" verdict follows from the sourced cells beside it, set out in full in the next three sections, and says so where it rests on one race's evidence alone.
| Demand | Singles HYROX, Open or Pro | Road marathon | Heavier in | When to mark this row |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Time on your feet | 1.5 hours, the official HYROX US FAQ's average finisher time for 2024/2025; no singles-only figure is cited | Mean finish times of about 4 h 14 min to 5 h 15 min by sex and age group, from 270 big-city marathons (Smyth, 2021) | Marathon | If you have never kept moving for as long as those marathon averages |
| 2. Running distance | 8 km, as 8 runs of 1000 m, each followed by a station, under the Singles rulebook | 42.195 km as one race distance, the World Athletics standard | Marathon | If you have never run anything close to 42.195 km in one go |
| 3. Fuel running short | No HYROX fuelling study is cited here; the 1.5-hour all-finisher average sits where our nutrition guide finds published fuelling advice starting to divide | Small carbohydrate stores can limit endurance performance (Rapoport, 2010); in Smyth's main analysis 28 percent of men and 17 percent of women hit the wall, fuelling being one possible cause | Marathon, on the marathon evidence alone | If you have faded badly late in a long run, or have never eaten or drunk on the move |
| 4. How near your limit | Most of a simulated Open race at 90 percent of maximum heart rate or above; the authors assume anaerobic as well as aerobic energy was needed (Brandt, 2025) | Average speed or oxygen uptake below the runners' lactate or anaerobic threshold, in two small studies (Billat, 2012 and 2022) | Singles HYROX, on the studies available | If most of your training is steady and you rarely go near your limit |
| 5. Load through the legs | A sled push over 50 m, a sled pull over 50 m and 100 m of sandbag lunges, at loads set by division | Nothing to push, pull or carry beyond what you choose to take | Singles HYROX | If you have never pushed or pulled a loaded sled, or lunged under load |
| 6. Grip | Kettlebells held for 200 m of farmers carry, a rope through the sled pull, and handles through 1000 m on the SkiErg and 1000 m on the rower | No implement to hold | Singles HYROX | If your grip gives out before your legs in a hard session |
| 7. Stopping and starting | 8 runs and 8 stations in alternation, with the sled push split into 4 x 12.5 m and the sled pull into 4 x 12.5 m | One continuous course; in Billat's 2012 group, heart rate rose to km 12, then held steady to km 28 | Singles HYROX | If your pace falls apart after you stop and set off again |
| 8. Judged movement | Judges can apply movement-standard and rep-count penalties during the race, under the Singles rulebook | No reps and no movement standard for a judge to rule on | Singles HYROX | If nobody has ever ruled on your reps against a written standard |
| 9. The days after | Not measured in Brandt's 2025 study, which recorded the race, not the days after it | Creatine kinase, a blood marker of muscle damage, still raised on the third day after 42 km in a 2016 study of amateur men (Ryu) | Unscored: only one side measured here | Not while it is unscored: no study cited here measured the HYROX side |
Where the marathon asks for more
Time on your feet
The official HYROX US FAQ, answering how long a race takes, gives the 2024/2025 average finisher time as 1.5 hours and calls the competition comparable to a sprint triathlon or a fast half marathon. The marathon figures come from Smyth's 2021 PLoS ONE analysis of 4,183,362 race records from 270 races in 38 cities, 2005 to 2019.
In the paper's original dataset, mean finish time by sex and age group ran from about 4 h 14 min, for men aged 45 to 49, to about 5 h 15 min, for women aged 60 and over. Both are averages from different sources and years, so they sit side by side here and are never turned into a ratio.
Distance in one unbroken run
World Athletics gives the marathon distance as 26 miles and 385 yards, or 42.195 km. A singles HYROX holds 8 km of running, and each 1000 m run is followed by a station. The marathon has no such break.
Fuel that runs short late in the race
Rapoport's 2010 model in PLoS Computational Biology notes that even the leanest athletes store enough fat to power back-to-back marathons, yet small carbohydrate reservoirs can catastrophically limit endurance performance. How tightly depends on variables including muscle mass distribution, glycogen density and running speed.
Smyth's 2021 paper counts a runner as hitting the wall on slowing by at least 25 percent for at least 5 km after the 20 km mark, against their own pace from 5 to 20 km. In the main analysis, 28 percent of men and 17 percent of women did, their slowdown starting on average at 29.6 km and 29.3 km respectively. Smyth keeps the cause open: the wall may arise from a combination of factors, including inadequate fuelling, a lack of training or a diminished intentional state.
World Athletics notes refuelling stations every 5 km on a marathon course. On the HYROX side, the 1.5-hour all-finisher average sits close to where the fuelling advice in our HYROX nutrition guide starts to divide. On what the course supplies, the Singles rulebook says water is available at least once during, before or after each pass through the ROXZONE, and a sports drink or other hydration product may also be available.
Where a singles HYROX asks for more
How near your limit the effort sits
Brandt and colleagues, in Frontiers in Physiology in 2025, put eleven recreational HYROX athletes through a simulated race to Individual Open Division standards. For a median 79.5 percent of the time they worked at 90 percent of maximum heart rate or above. Median peak blood lactate was 8.5 mmol/L at the exercise stations against 7.7 on the runs, and peak exertion 18 against 16 on the 6-to-20 Borg scale, with heart rate, lactate and exertion all highest at the wall balls. The authors assume both aerobic and anaerobic energy were needed, with anaerobic glycolysis a key contributor on the heaviest stations.
The authors list their own limits: each athlete raced alone, with no competitors or spectators, the runs were not on a track, the sled was not the official competition sled, and all but one participant had very good to excellent cardiorespiratory fitness.
On the marathon side, Billat and colleagues' 2012 group was 14 middle-aged men described as recreational marathon runners, all national-level short-distance triathletes or international-level cyclists. Their average race speed sat below their lactate-threshold speed, at 87 percent of maximum heart rate on average. The 2022 group, ten male endurance runners at the 2019 Paris Marathon, averaged an oxygen uptake below their anaerobic threshold while heart rate held at 88 to 91 percent of maximum after the fifth kilometre.
Heart rate ran high in both, and the 2022 paper concludes it is unreliable for estimating metabolic intensity during a marathon, so heart rate alone cannot settle this row. The threshold evidence is more telling: the marathon groups stayed below theirs, and the HYROX authors assume anaerobic energy was needed. The studies used different people, methods and years, so the direction is worth more than any single figure.
Load your legs have to move
Under the Singles rulebook, the sled push is set at 225 lb (102 kg) for Open Women and 335 lb (152 kg) for Open Men, including the sled, over 50 m. The sled pull is set at 172 lb (78 kg) for Open Women and 227 lb (103 kg) for Open Men, again including the sled, over 50 m. The sandbag lunges cover 100 m with 22 lb (10 kg) for Open Women or 44 lb (20 kg) for Open Men on the shoulders. Pro raises those loads, and the weight standards tool lists them by division. A marathon prescribes no load beyond your own body.
In Brandt's study, run on a sled that was not the official competition sled, the sled push took a median of 128 seconds and the sled pull 155, which the authors read as force exerted over prolonged periods. So the load row is about holding force for minutes. Set against other forms of high-intensity functional training, the authors rate HYROX's maximum-strength requirements as moderate to low, a comparison that leaves the marathon out.
What your hands have to hold, and for how far
You carry kettlebells for 200 m on the farmers carry, at 2 x 35 lb (16 kg) in Open Women and 2 x 53 lb (24 kg) in Open Men. You hold a rope through the sled pull, and the handles through 1000 m on the SkiErg and 1000 m on the rower. A marathon puts no implement in your hands. Our grip strength guide covers how to train for this row.
Stopping and starting again
In a singles HYROX each run hands over to a station, and the handover happens in the ROXZONE, the central transition zone athletes run through between every run and station. Inside the sled stations the push is split into 4 x 12.5 m and the pull into 4 x 12.5 m. Brandt and colleagues assume that moving from fatiguing upper-body or lower-body work into running holds back running performance and needs specific adaptation. In Billat's 2012 marathoners, by contrast, heart rate rose until km 12, held steady until km 28 and then fell towards the finish. Our compromised running guide covers what each station does to the run after it.
A judge watching the movement
Under the Season 26/27 Singles rulebook, judges and head judges can apply movement-standard and rep-count penalties in real time, but only race directors can disqualify a racer. For the wall balls the rulebook spells out the consequence: no warnings are given at the wall balls, and an invalid rep simply does not count. A marathon has no rep for anyone to count. Our HYROX penalties guide sets out how those calls work.
Why the days-after row is unscored
Ryu and colleagues, in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science in 2016, randomly assigned 30 male amateur runners to 10 km, 21 km and 42 km groups and took blood before and after the races and on the third day of recovery. Creatine kinase, a blood marker of muscle damage, was significantly above pre-race levels after the race and on day three in all three groups, and highest in the 42 km group at both points. The authors conclude that such damage can increase as running distance increases. The paper stops at day three, so it gives no date for a return to normal.
Brandt's HYROX study stopped at the finish line, so row 9 is unscored. A shorter race does not settle it by default either, because a singles HYROX adds loaded work that Ryu's runners did not do. Our HYROX recovery guide covers the practical side.
What your marks say about which race is harder for you
Take your marks in rows 1 to 3 as a share of three, and your marks in rows 4 to 8 as a share of five. Compare the two shares: the larger one names the harder race for you.
| Where your marks fall | What it means for you | Read next |
|---|---|---|
| A larger share in rows 1 to 3 | The marathon is the harder race for you. The rows you marked there are your gaps. | If HYROX is still the plan, close the running gap first: HYROX running plan |
| A larger share in rows 4 to 8 | HYROX is the harder race for you. The rows you marked there are your gaps, and steady road running rarely rehearses them. | What to change first: HYROX training for runners; for row 7, compromised running |
| Equal shares, with some marks | Neither race is the easy one for you; each will find a different gap. | The whole training picture: HYROX training guide |
| No marks at all | Your history already covers every scored row, and row 9, which is unscored, is the open question. | Recovery after a HYROX: HYROX recovery |
The row count is not a score. Five rows lean towards a singles HYROX and three towards the marathon because that is how this page divides the demands, not because HYROX is harder overall. That is why the table compares shares rather than totals: two marks out of three in rows 1 to 3 outweigh two out of five in rows 4 to 8, and marking every row gives equal shares.
What Pro, Relay, Doubles and Adaptive do to the table
Pro. PRO divisions use heavier loads than Open, so rows 5 and 6 get heavier: the Pro women's sled push is set at 335 lb (152 kg) and the Pro men's at 445 lb (202 kg), both including the sled. Row 2 stays put, for the reason set out in the first section above. More in our Open versus Pro comparison.
Relay. In Relay, a 4-person team splits the standard 8 runs and 8 stations, each member covering 2 x 1 km and 2 workout stations, so each athlete's share of the distance, load and grip rows shrinks to a fraction.
Doubles. Doubles races under its own Doubles rulebook, so read our HYROX doubles guide before scoring it here.
Adaptive. Adaptive divisions race under a separate Adaptive rulebook, so this table does not apply to them as written.
Two effort curves, sketched by a marathoner before a first HYROX
Jeremy Miller calls the build-up to a first HYROX the hardest preparation of a running career that includes marathons and ultramarathons, and draws both races as intensity against time. The marathon comes out as "a nice smooth upward progression"; the HYROX goes "up down up down as the intensity is growing". It is one athlete's account. It illustrates rows 4 and 7 and proves neither of them. Part of the video promotes Miller's own electrolyte company; nothing here relies on that segment, and no figure on this page comes from the video.
Frequently asked questions about HYROX and the marathon
Does HYROX compare itself to a marathon?
Not in its answer on race length. There, the official HYROX US FAQ likens the race to a sprint triathlon or a fast half marathon, with a 2024/2025 average finisher time of 1.5 hours. A marathon is 42.195 km by the World Athletics standard, against 8 km of running in a singles HYROX.
Does HYROX push your heart rate higher than a marathon?
On the studies available it appears to, though loosely. Eleven recreational athletes in Brandt and colleagues' 2025 simulated race spent most of it at 90 percent of maximum heart rate or above. Billat's 2012 marathoners, all national-level short-distance triathletes or international-level cyclists, averaged 87 percent, and the 2022 group held 88 to 91 percent after the fifth kilometre.
Why does a HYROX feel harder than its running distance suggests?
Because the running is not where the hardest minutes sit, at least in the simulated race studied here. In Brandt and colleagues' 2025 study, median peak blood lactate and peak exertion were higher at the stations than on the runs, and heart rate, lactate and exertion all peaked at the wall balls.
What makes a marathon hard for someone who mostly lifts?
Duration, distance and fuel, which is where the marathon's weight falls. World Athletics fixes the race at 42.195 km, and in Smyth's 2021 study of big-city marathons even the fastest sex and age group averaged a little over four hours. Smyth also counts inadequate fuelling among the possible causes of hitting the wall.
Is a HYROX Pro race closer to a marathon, or further from it?
Further on load and grip, and no closer on distance. Pro adds weight: the Season 26/27 Singles rulebook sets the Pro Men's sled push at 445 lb (202 kg) including the sled, against 335 lb (152 kg) for Open Men. Pro racers run the same distance as Open racers, so the marathon keeps its lead on running.
Does a marathon take longer to recover from than a HYROX?
No study cited here measured both. In Ryu and colleagues' 2016 study of 30 amateur men, creatine kinase was still raised on the third day after 42 km, and higher than after 10 or 21 km. Brandt's 2025 HYROX study measured the race itself, not the days after, so this page leaves that row unscored.
How does a HYROX Relay or Doubles race compare with a marathon?
Less directly than a singles race does. A HYROX Relay splits the runs and stations between 4 team members, so each athlete takes on a fraction of the running, load and grip a singles racer faces. Doubles runs under its own Doubles rulebook, so read the doubles guide before setting a Doubles race against a marathon.
When do marathon runners usually hit the wall?
Late in the race, when it happens at all. Smyth's 2021 analysis of big-city marathons found the slowdown starting, on average, just short of 30 km for both sexes. In the main analysis it hit fewer than a third of men and fewer than a fifth of women, and Smyth argues that earlier survey-based studies may over-report it.
