Find your foot, then find the shoe
Every shoe list for this sport starts in the same place: a model, a stack height, a verdict. That order is backwards. Two people with the same shoe size can have completely different feet, and the shoe that fixes one of them makes the other one worse. A wide forefoot sitting on a narrow heel needs a different answer from a foot that is uniformly broad, and neither is solved by picking the shoe that scored highest in someone else's review.

Foot shape matters more here than in a road race because of what one pair has to cover: 8 stations plus 8 km of running, split into legs of 1000 m. Running loads the foot in one direction, repeatedly, at a load you have trained. The stations load it in directions you almost never rehearse, at loads that are fixed by the rulebook and do not care how your shoe fits.

Run every one of those tests at the end of a session, not the start. A foot that has already done loaded work sits differently in the shoe, and a fit problem that hides on fresh legs will usually show itself on tired ones.
Why the stations, not the running, decide your fit
Running loads the foot forward and down, over and over, in the direction the shoe was designed for. The stations do something else. They push the foot into the parts of the upper that have no room left, in directions the shoe was never shaped around. Group the problem by direction of pressure and it becomes much easier to predict which part of your fit is about to fail.
Forward and down: the sled push loads the toe box you already filled
The sled push is the single hardest station on a wide foot. Over 50 m you drive the forefoot into the turf at a steep angle under the full sled load, 335 lb (152 kg) for Open men and 225 lb (102 kg) for Open women, rising to 445 lb (202 kg) in the Pro men's division. The foot splays under that force. In a shoe with room, the splay happens inside the upper and the force goes into the ground. In a shoe that was already marginal standing still, the splay happens against the upper, and a chunk of your drive turns into pressure on the sides of your feet. That is the point where a narrow shoe stops being a comfort question and starts costing you seconds.
Deep flexion: sandbag lunges want toe-box height, not width
Almost every fit guide treats the toe box as one measurement. It is two. Over 100 m of lunges carrying 44 lb (20 kg) for Open men or 22 lb (10 kg) for Open women, the trailing foot spends the whole station with the toes bent hard under load and the joint at the base of the big toe taking the weight. What fails there is vertical clearance and how easily the forefoot flexes, not girth. A shoe can be genuinely wide and still be too shallow and too stiff across the ball, and you will only find that out in deep flexion. Test it with a lunge, never standing still.
Backward and up: the sled pull is where a narrow heel shows up
The sled pull is the one station that loads your shoe in the opposite direction to everything else. Over 50 m you brace and pull backward, which drives the heel up out of the heel counter rather than down into it. A narrow heel sitting inside a full wide-width shoe has room to move, and it will use it. This is the mechanism behind a familiar sequence: an athlete sizes up to solve a forefoot problem, then spends the back half of the race with a heel sliding inside the shoe. The grip stations that follow, including the 200 m farmers carry at 2 x 53 lb (24 kg) per hand for Open men, give you nothing back once a blister has started.
The one station where the rules let you take them off
The official Season 26/27 HYROX rulebook is explicit that closed-toe shoes are required at all times during the race, except at the wall ball station where racers may remove them. The carve-out has conditions worth reading before you plan around it: racers may take their shoes off once they reach their assigned wall ball target, must leave them under the rig, and must take them to the finisher stage afterwards, as they may not return to the wall ball area after finishing. Every division racks up the same 100 reps, to a target set at 2.70 m for women and 3.00 m for men. Some athletes take the option and some do not, but it is the only point on the course where footwear is negotiable. Does your foot actually swell over the run? What the measurements say
The most repeated piece of race-shoe advice in this sport is that your feet swell over the distance, so you should buy half a size up. The best primary evidence available does not support it.
Mo, Lu, Li and Zhao published a study in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology in 2024 measuring the feet of 19 male recreational runners before and after a 10 km run. Foot length increased by about 0.6 mm, which the authors say may be partially attributable to swelling in the forefoot. Ball girth decreased by about 1.2 mm. The authors describe both changes as trivial, and they found no significant change in ball width, instep girth, truncated foot length or hallux height. What the measurements show is small and directionally mixed, not the one-way expansion the folklore assumes, and nothing on that scale decides whether your shoe fits.
Two caveats, and they matter. The sample is 19 people, all male, all recreational, one distance, one lab, so this is a small study rather than a settled question, and it does not tell you what happens to a foot after a loaded sled push or a full set of wall balls. And it is not a claim that feet never change over a race. What it does support is narrower and more useful: measurable swelling after a run of this distance is small and directionally mixed, so sizing up as a swelling countermeasure is not backed by this evidence.
The better model is this. Your foot does not outgrow the shoe over the race. A shoe that was marginal at rest becomes intolerable once station loads push your foot into the parts of the upper that had no room in the first place. Fix the fit at rest and the race takes care of itself; add length to buy width and you have created a heel problem to solve a forefoot one.
Width labels, and what 2E actually means
D is the standard width in men's sizing. 2E is the common wide designation and 4E the extra-wide one, each stepping the whole shoe outward, heel included, not just the front. That last detail is the one people miss. A dedicated width and an anatomical toe box are not the same product: the width increases girth throughout, while an anatomical toe box widens the front and leaves the rear alone. If your heel is narrow, the second is usually the better answer.
Two boundaries here. Women's width labels use a different scale, and women's lasts differ in more than width, which our women's HYROX shoe guide covers. The practical limitation is that plenty of models simply never offer a wide fitting, so the label is often unavailable even when it is the right answer. Which is why the fit tests matter more than the designation. RunRepeat publishes a stated method rather than a verdict here, measuring toe-box width in the big-toe area across the shoes it tests and reporting a range of roughly 70 to 80+ mm, which makes its numbers comparable in a way an editorial impression is not. Measure your own forefoot at its widest point and you have a number you can hold a shoe against.
How to test the fit before you race in them
Do this as one gym session in the shoes you intend to race in, in this order, because the order is what reproduces race conditions.
- Push a loaded sled over a working distance and pay attention only to your forefoot. Set the sled to your own division's load, which you can check on our HYROX weight standards tool. Burning along the outside edge or toes pressing hard into the upper is your answer.
- Lunge a loaded set immediately afterwards, carrying weight, and watch the trailing foot. You are testing toe-box height and forefoot flex, not width, so the question is whether the shoe lets the toes bend without the joint at the base of the big toe taking a hard edge.
- Run a leg on fatigued feet, last, not first. This is the only part of the session that tells you the truth about heel hold, because a heel that stays put fresh will often lift once the calf is tired and the foot has flattened slightly.
- Take the shoes off and look for pressure marks. Red across the instep points to volume. Red along the ball points to width. A hot spot at the back of the heel points to lockdown, and no amount of extra length will fix it.
If you wear custom orthotics or aftermarket insoles, run all four steps with them in. They change depth and shape enough that a fit verified without them tells you very little.

Two academic papers on foot volume and morphology after running could not be retrieved, one blocked and one behind a cookie wall, so no figure from either appears here.
