The HYROX Volunteer Role and Shift to Ask For, by Your Goal

Judge a station before you race it, watch the Pro waves or earn an entry: how to pick a HYROX volunteer role and a shift that will not clash with your own start.

Key Takeaways
  • HYROX Benelux's volunteer FAQ states that volunteers pick an available role and shift themselves in Rosterfy once their registration is approved, and are not assigned automatically.
  • HYROX's judge tutorials page refers to "the Workstation you are assigned to", so a HYROX volunteer can ask to judge but may not get to choose which station.
  • HYROX's US FAQ says racers cannot choose their start time and receive their individual start wave only three days before the event, so a HYROX volunteer who is also racing should book a shift on a different day or well away from their division's wave block.
  • HYROX volunteer rewards are set market by market: as of 29 October 2026, HYROX Benelux's volunteer FAQ gave one free Benelux race entry for one full shift and two entries plus an 80 euro voucher for three, HYROX US event pages offered Reward Points per completed shift, and the HYROX Australia, Singapore and South Korea pages listed vouchers rather than race entries.
  • Head Judge is a separate role from volunteer station judging: HYROX Benelux requires at least three HYROX races as an athlete, judging experience at three HYROX events and a written recommendation from a current Head Judge before you can apply.

You can usually choose your HYROX volunteer role and your shift, but not always the station you judge, and if you are racing the same event the shift matters far more than the role. Which role and shift to ask for depends on what you want from the day: a clean run at your own race, a close look at a station before you compete, a view of the Pro waves, or a race entry. If the race itself is new to you, our guide to what HYROX is explains the format you would be working.

Can you choose your HYROX volunteer role?

Yes, within limits. HYROX Benelux's FAQ says you pick an available role and shift in Rosterfy after your registration is approved, and that "You will not be assigned automatically". The limit is judging: HYROX's judge tutorials page refers to the workstation you are assigned to, so you can request the judging role without getting to pick your station.

The roles themselves are no secret. HYROX UK's Birmingham event page says roles vary by event and may include judging at the 8 workout stations, water stations, bag drop, registration, spectator services and wider event operations. HYROX Benelux adds finish and recovery to that list. On experience, the same Benelux FAQ is direct: for judging it is "preferred but not mandatory".

What you want from the day decides the role and the shift

The rows run from the tightest constraint, your own race, to the most flexible. If two rows fit you, let the higher row decide the shift.

What you want from the day Role to request Shift to pick Check before you commit If that role or shift is full
Race the same event without the shift costing you your race Any role. Here the shift matters, not the role A shift on a day you are not racing, or the half of the day furthest from your division's block on the provisional schedule HYROX's US FAQ says racers cannot choose their start time, so plan around your division's whole block. In Benelux only fully completed shifts count towards a reward, so a shift you cut short to race earns none Book a shift on another day of the event, or volunteer at an event you are not racing
Learn the judging standard at a station before you race it Station judge Any judging shift, ideally on the day before your own race at a multi-day event The station may be assigned to you. HYROX Benelux prefers but does not require judging experience, and HYROX's tutorials supplement the training Take a floor role such as water at the same event, or ask to judge at a later one; meanwhile read the HYROX no reps guide for the station you want to learn
Watch Pro racing up close Station judge, or a floor role such as water The shift that covers the Pro waves on the event's provisional schedule Which day the Pro waves run. For HYROX Birmingham (27 October to 1 November 2026), HYROX UK's provisional schedule put Pro Men and Pro Women on the Friday only and Pro Doubles on the Saturday evening Buy a spectator ticket for that day instead
Earn a race entry Any role A full shift you know you can finish Whether your market pays in entries. As of 29 October 2026, Benelux listed free entries, the US Reward Points towards tickets and Brazil a ticket discount; France offered a prize draw, DACH listed no entry, and Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea listed vouchers. HYROX UK's FAQ says UK volunteer codes cover the athlete ticket only Take any other open shift at the same event: in Benelux and the US the reward comes from completing a shift, whatever the role
Volunteer as a club, school team or charity Whatever group arrangement the organiser offers The shift agreed with the organiser Ask your market's volunteer contact whether group places exist. HYROX US event pages invite nonprofits, student organisations and athletic programmes to ask about fundraising and service-hour programmes Each member registers in Rosterfy and books the same open shift
A first look at HYROX with no calls to make Athlete support: registration, bag drop, water or recovery An early shift, so you see check-in and the first waves go off The position's description in Rosterfy, which HYROX Benelux says sets out each position's tasks and responsibilities Any other open athlete-support position

If you take an athlete-support role, it helps to know the racer's side of each desk. At registration, the Singles rulebook sets out what check-in involves: racers report to the check-in area to collect a timing chip and ankle strap, a racer number and a wrist lanyard, and must bring a government-issued photo ID and their registration confirmation. At bag drop, be ready for the question of what happens if something goes missing; the rulebook's answer is that changing rooms and a secure bag drop are available at the venue, though the organiser accepts no responsibility for lost or stolen bags or items. At the water tables, the crew is how the rulebook's hydration provision reaches racers, and that provision says water is available at least once during, before or after each pass through the ROXZONE, and a sports drink or other hydration product may also be available. The HYROX ROXZONE guide shows where those water points sit in the course.

Volunteering in the same week you race

This is the row that catches people, because the two bookings happen in the wrong order. HYROX's US FAQ answers "Can I specify my start time?" with a flat no: racers estimate a finish time when they sign up, and the fastest estimates go in the first waves. The same FAQ says official wave times for each division are announced two weeks before the event, and your individual start wave time arrives three days before. HYROX UK's Birmingham page adds that "start time changes are not permitted" and points racers to a provisional schedule for planning.

On race day the Singles rulebook is no more forgiving: racers must assemble at the start tunnel area ten minutes before their start time to receive official instructions about the race start. The penalty code table in the Singles, Doubles and Relay rulebooks also lists disqualification for starting at an incorrect start time without permission, so do not plan a shift that only works if you can switch waves on the day.

Volunteer shifts are usually booked before you know your own start, so the safe choice at a multi-day event is a shift on a different day. At a single-day event, pick the half of the day furthest from your division's block on the provisional schedule, and swap if the published wave times land badly. HYROX Benelux openly invites people to help "before or after your own race", so doing both is normal; the shift just has to sit clear of your start. Our HYROX race day guide covers what the racing half of that day looks like.

What a station judge does, and what is not theirs to decide

Before the shift

HYROX's judge tutorials page says its short tutorials are designed to supplement "live online and in-person training", and suggests starting with the tutorial for the workstation you are assigned to. HYROX DACH's volunteer page likewise promises "comprehensive online and on-site training". The stations always run in the same order: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jump, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, Wall Balls. Check where yours falls before you arrive.

Part of the job is checking that racers use their division's load. Before your shift, use the weight standards tool to see what the Open, Pro, Doubles and Relay divisions lift at your station. Several Adaptive divisions have their own loads or movements, and the tool has no Adaptive table, so ask your head judge before an Adaptive wave reaches you.

On the floor

HYROX's Nashville event page describes station judges "helping alongside our expert team of head judges to make sure standards are met". Your authority has a ceiling. In Singles, Doubles and Relay, the rulebook draws the line plainly: judges and head judges can apply movement-standard and rep-count penalties in real time, but only race directors can disqualify a racer.

The Singles rulebook's penalty protocols for the SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jump and rower print the same ladder: a formal warning on the first infringement, a 15-second penalty on the second, and a further 15 seconds for each infringement after that with no more warnings. Even there a warning is not guaranteed, because the rulebook adds that certain violations can bring an immediate penalty with no warning, depending on severity. The farmers carry and sandbag lunge protocols differ from that ladder, and the wall balls have a rule of their own. In Singles, Doubles and Relay, no warnings are given at the wall balls, and an invalid rep simply does not count.

Each station also has its own movement standard. In Singles, Doubles and Relay, a judge at the burpee broad jump checks that the chest clearly touches the ground on every burpee, and the Singles rulebook defines that contact on the first burpee of each section as the nipple line making clear contact with the ground. The full station-by-station standard is in the HYROX no reps guide, and what each call costs the racer is in the HYROX penalties guide.

You are not the only enforcement on the course. The Singles rulebook notes that many penalties are detected automatically by the timing system from chip reads, including incorrect use of the IN and OUT arches and missed sled laps. The crew also decides where each racer works, and in Singles, Doubles and Relay the rulebook backs that with a 2-minute penalty per infringement for using any lane, erg or wall-ball station other than the one assigned by the race crew.

For a feel of what a judging shift looks like from the floor, this first-person video follows two volunteer judges at HYROX Singapore in 2024. Treat it as a picture of the work, not as a guide to current reward terms.

Head Judge is a different job

Head Judges are recruited separately from volunteers. HYROX Benelux's FAQ sets out the clearest bar: at least three HYROX races as an athlete, judging experience at three or more HYROX events, a written recommendation from a current Head Judge, availability for the full duration of Benelux event weekends, and fluency in Dutch and English. HYROX DACH's support page lists a fixed event fee, a free event outfit and shared hotel accommodation if required for its Head Judges, under a note that its Head Judge positions for Season 25/26 are already filled. HYROX France describes its head judges as a network of service providers with expenses covered, and its page said the next selection would take place in May 2026. If Head Judge is your long-term goal, in Benelux the route runs through judging at HYROX events first.

What HYROX volunteers earn, market by market (checked 29 October 2026)

Each regional HYROX organiser sets its own terms and changes them, so this table is a snapshot of what each market's HYROX pages said on 29 October 2026. Some tie the reward to a completed shift; others list what a race crew member receives. The US row comes from an event page and the UK row from HYROX UK's FAQ, because we could not read reward terms on either market's general volunteer page.

Market What that page listed for volunteers HYROX page
United States Reward Points for each completed shift, redeemable for items such as complimentary or discounted tickets with pre-sale access, and merchandise HYROX Nashville event page
UK and Ireland Volunteer codes, which apply to the athlete ticket only, not Lite Flex or Flex. The FAQ gives no per-shift reward scale HYROX UK FAQ
Benelux A choice of two schemes for full shifts of about eight hours. Option 1: one free Benelux race entry for one full shift, an entry plus an 80 euro merchandise voucher for two, and two entries plus the voucher for three, after which the cycle starts again. Option 2: an 80 euro merchandise voucher per full shift. Also a PUMA x HYROX T-shirt, one meal per shift and travel costs up to 80 euros per event day HYROX Benelux volunteer page
Brazil A 50% discount on one HYROX Brasil ticket, a uniform, one meal and a patch HYROX Brasil support page
France Entry into a prize draw for a place at a HYROX event in France, and an event T-shirt HYROX France support page
Germany, Austria and Switzerland A judge T-shirt, food and drinks, a volunteer lounge, insurance cover, online and on-site training, and a thank-you gift. No race entry is listed HYROX DACH support page
Australia An AU$150 HYROX voucher at each Australian event the page listed (Melbourne and Brisbane), redeemable only onsite at HYROX Australia races within 13 months, plus a patch, a PUMA crew T-shirt and a foundation course HYROX Australia race crew page
New Zealand An NZD$150 HYROX World Merchandise Voucher at Auckland, the New Zealand event the page listed, redeemable only onsite at HYROX New Zealand races within 13 months, plus a patch, a keychain, a PUMA crew T-shirt, a foundational course and snacks HYROX Australia race crew page
Singapore An SGD25 HYROX World Rewards voucher, a patch, a collectible, a PUMA T-shirt, the HYROX365 Foundation Course and meals HYROX Singapore race crew page
South Korea A KRW 100,000 HYROX World Store gift card, a patch, a PUMA T-shirt, a foundational course and a meal HYROX South Korea support page

So volunteering can lead to a code or a discounted entry in some markets, and to merchandise or a prize draw in others. If yours pays in vouchers, the HYROX cost guide lists the other ways to bring the price of an entry down. Whatever the table says, check your event's own Rosterfy listing before you count on any reward.

The Benelux fine print. HYROX Benelux says a free entry earned by volunteering is valid for a Benelux race taking place within one year of the shift that earned it, can be combined with a friend's code to enter Doubles, and does not guarantee a place in your preferred race or division. Its FAQ also states that only fully completed shifts count towards the reward programme.

From Rosterfy sign-up to the end of your shift

  1. Create a Rosterfy account through your market's HYROX volunteer page. Most markets link HYROX's global portal; HYROX UK calls it "your one-stop shop for HYROX volunteer opportunities worldwide", and some Asia-Pacific pages link a separate Rosterfy login.
  2. Look for the event under Events. HYROX Benelux says volunteer registration opens separately for each event, so a missing event has simply not opened yet.
  3. Register your interest, and only if you are sure you can attend. HYROX Benelux reviews the registration and emails you once it is confirmed.
  4. Log back in and pick your shift and position from what is open. Benelux warns that "available spots can fill up quickly", so do not sit on the confirmation email.
  5. When your division's wave times are published, check for a clash. To swap, Benelux says to sign up for the new shift first and only then withdraw from the old one, because a released spot can be taken immediately.
  6. Read the briefing before the day. HYROX Benelux sends its crew briefing by email and through Rosterfy one week before the event; if you are judging, watch the tutorial for your workstation.
  7. Complete the full shift, because Benelux counts only fully completed shifts towards its rewards. If you chose Benelux's merchandise option, the voucher codes arrive by email after the event.

One eligibility note: HYROX Benelux sets the minimum volunteer age at 18. Other markets did not state an age on the pages we checked, so look for it on your event's listing.

Frequently asked questions

Do HYROX volunteers get a free ticket?

Only in some markets, and not always one per shift. HYROX Benelux's tier table gives a free Benelux entry for a single full shift and two entries for three. Brazil's page offers 50% off one ticket, and US volunteers collect Reward Points that can go towards complimentary or discounted tickets. HYROX UK's FAQ confirms UK volunteer codes exist without saying what earns one. Elsewhere the pages we checked on 29 October 2026 list vouchers, kit or, in France, a prize draw.

Can you cancel a HYROX volunteer shift?

Yes. HYROX Benelux asks volunteers who can no longer attend to cancel through Rosterfy as soon as possible, from their own account, so the place can go to another volunteer.

How long is a HYROX volunteer shift?

HYROX Benelux describes a full shift as approximately eight hours, with a morning and an afternoon shift covering a race day that can start at 06:30 and run until 22:00. Most other markets do not publish a length on their volunteer pages, so read the shift times in Rosterfy before you commit.

Do you need experience to judge at HYROX?

No. HYROX Benelux says judging experience is preferred but not mandatory, and HYROX's judge tutorials supplement live online and in-person training. On the floor you work alongside head judges, and in Singles, Doubles and Relay a station judge can penalise movement-standard and rep-count faults but cannot disqualify anyone; that call belongs to the race director.

Can you volunteer and race at the same HYROX event?

Yes, and HYROX Benelux's page actively invites it. The one thing to protect is your own start. Take a shift on a day you are not racing, or at a single-day event the shift furthest from your division's block.

How do you sign up to volunteer at HYROX?

Through Rosterfy. Create an account from your market's HYROX volunteer page, find the event under Events and register your interest. HYROX Benelux reviews it and emails a confirmation, after which you log back in and pick an open shift and position. If your event is missing, its volunteer registration has not opened yet.

Are HYROX judges paid?

Station judging is listed as a volunteer role on HYROX's US and UK event pages. Head Judges are recruited separately, and of the pages we checked, HYROX DACH's is the one that lists a fixed fee for them.

Can you use a HYROX volunteer code on the Flex add-on?

Not in the UK. HYROX UK's FAQ says a volunteer code covers only the athlete ticket, not Lite Flex or Flex, so either add-on is paid for separately. That matters because the same FAQ ties refunds to the Flex Add-On. HYROX US encourages volunteers who want flexibility to buy the Flex Add-On or Flex Lite.
